Matthew 28: Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus

Matthew 28: Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus Collin Leong.  June 23rd 2025.  (v1-10) Jesus Has Risen  (Psalm 16:1-11; Psalm 49:1-20; Mark 16:1-8; Luke 24:1-12; John 20:1-9) (v1-4) After the Sabbath, at dawn of the first day of the week (Sunday), Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel had rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lighting, and his clothes as white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.  According to Mark 16:1-2 , there were three women who went to the tomb with spices to anoint Jesus' body. They were Magdalene, Mary the mother of James ("the other Mary") and Salome (mother of James and John). They were worried they can't move the stone.  (See the Appendix about the stone that covers the tomb) However the stone was already rolled away by the angel, and the guards were so afraid they are paralyzed. The phrase "His appearanc...

Matthew 27: Jesus Was Crucified and Buried

Matthew 27: Jesus Was Crucified and Buried  Collin Leong. July 19th  2025 (v1-10) Judas Hangs Himself (v1-2) Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders made their plans how to have Jesus executed. They bound him away and handed him over to Pilate the governor.  Note that there is another trial of Jesus in the morning of Friday, before the full Sanhedrin, found in Luke 22:66-71 . Matthew's trial happened in the night before (Thursday night), and was an unofficial proceeding; while the morning trial was a formal trial.  In the morning trial, they asked him a direct question whether He is the Son of God. Jesus replied "You say that I am."  That is when they came up with a plan to execute Jesus by bringing Him to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of Judea. (See Appendix about Pilate) (v3-5) When Judas saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the 30 pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders. He told them that he h...

Matthew 26: Jesus Arrested

Matthew 26: Jesus Arrested Collin Leong. 10 June 2025 (v1-5) The Plot Against Jesus  (Mark 14:1-2; Luke 22:1-6; John 11:45-57) (v1-2) After Jesus told the parables in previous chapter, he said to his disciple that the Passover is two days away, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.  (v3-4) The chief priests and the elders assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, and they schemed to arrest Jesus secretly and kill Him. They told themselves not to do this during the festival, else there may be a riot among the people.  Though they planned not to arrest Him during the Passover festival, they did arrest Him in the Garden of Gethsemane when the festival had already started after sundown. However, they did it at a secluded place at night where most people are already sleeping.  (v6-13) Jesus Anointed at Bethany  (Mark 14:3-9; John 12:1-8) (v6-9) When Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came to Jesu...

Matthew 25: Separation of Righteous from Unrighteous

Matthew 25: Separation of Righteous from Unrighteous  Collin Leong, 3rd June, 2025 (1-13)  Parable of the Ten Virgins (1-5) Jesus said that at that time, the kingdom of heaven is like the ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. The five foolish ones did not take any oil with them. The wise ones took oil in jars with them. The bridegroom took a while to come, and they became drowsy and fell asleep.  (6-10) At midnight, a cry rang out and said that the bridegroom is here and asked them to come out. The virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones ask the wise ones for oil, but they said it is not enough for all of us, and asked them to go and buy their oil. But when they were away, the bridegroom arrived and went into the wedding banquet with the five wise virgin. And the door was shut.  (11-13) Later, the other five came and asked the Lord to open the door for them. But the Lord replied that He doesn't know them. Therefo...
